Where are they from?
Psalm 62:10 Do not trust in extortion or take pride in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
There is never easy to make a quick buck. If something sounds too good to be true, it often is, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Any of these sayings sound familiar?
In the consumer society that we live in we are always trying to get something for nothing. Have you ever been offered something cheep but asked not to ask where it came from? Chances are someone else has lost out so you can have this item for less. But its not just small time crooks selling stolen good that are the problem. Big powerful stores charge us a few pounds for a pair of jeans but still manage to make enormous profits, how is this possible? It’s possible because quite often the clothes are made people in other countries who only receive a pittance compared to what we pay for them. So for us to stay wealthy we need other people to stay in poverty, how can this be right? If our wealth is based on extorting others we can’t rely on it. As Christians we are called to serve those who live in poverty, not exploit their situation for our own purposes.
Challenge
Look at the shop that you buy most of clothes in. research where and how their clothes are made. If you find people are being treated unfairly, write a letter to the shop asking for them to give those workers a better deal.
